Fox Inquiry
After folding foxes during discovery origami, the children decided that they would like to know more about foxes.  First we wrote a list of questions we wanted to find out about.  Some of these questions were - Do foxes eat chicken?  Do foxes play with chickens?  Where do foxes live? Do foxes live underground?  How long do foxes live for?  Do foxes live in the snow?  After we had thought about what we wanted to learn, we then searched up this information in books from our library and on some websites.  We recorded all of this information on our research inquiry.  Then we shared it with the class.

Origami
We have been exploring origami during discovery over the past few weeks.  We have been following the folding instructions from a few different books.  Some of the folds are very tricky but there are pictures which help us.  Also, we have had a couple of parents helping us too.  We have made birds, dinosaurs, jumping frogs, snap dragons, water bombs, planes and our favourite, foxes.  If you would like to come and join us for an origami lesson, please do!

Matariki Celebrations
What a great Matariki Celebration we had last Friday.  Well done to all of our Matariki Stars at Oropi School and also to the fabulous performers in Kapahaka and in the class items.  Te Ruma o Te Kiwi were happy to share this day with you all.

Kiwi were also lucky enough to to have earned their class reward by Friday, so we treated ourselves to a movie and popcorn.  Well done Team Kiwi

Geology and Civil Engineering
during Discovery Learning.

A team of boys have been working for a number of days excavating a site in our gully.  Many large sized 'rocks' have been unearthed with much discussion about their origins taking place.  The latest discovery has uncovered the biggest 'rock' ever!  Ideas about volcanic rock, space rock and 'special rock' were considered until closer inspection revealed that it could possibly be concrete.  The amount of teamwork and problem solving to move the latest find was nothing less than impressive.  I can't wait until we see what this site is going to reveal next, or what the engineers decide to do with their newly excavated site.

Discovery Art
These children have used some leaves found in the gully and others brought from home to to create these amazing owl collages. They had to work carefully at matching the leaves to form the shape of the owl, skillfully sketch three different sized circles to create the eyes and then shape the middle piece to form the pupil. I think they look great!
