Hotcross Bun making

A group of children made hot cross buns with the supervision of Mrs Benge during discovery time.
They read the recipe and helped measure in the ingredients.
This picture was taken after the warm milk, water, some of the sugar and all of the yeast were left in a warm place for half an hour.  The mixture doubled in size and bubbles were seen in it.
The recipe asked for barely melted butter which we did in the microwave.  We mixed this with an egg, various spices, dried fruit, salt and the remaining sugar.
All children present then took turns stirring this mixture into the yeast mixture with the remaining flour.
Once it was combined to a soft dough it was put in a mixer and dough hooks did the task of kneading for 10 minutes.  When the ball of dough sprung back when lightly pressed it was ready to form into balls.  The children pushed a bit of dough through the opening formed by touching their forefinger and thumb together to make a smooth surface on the bun.
Then the balls were left in a warm place for an hour to double in size.  The above photo was 15 minutes in.
Doubled in size and ready to cook.
Once cooked the hotcross buns were glazed with a syrup of honey, golden syrup and water.
Taste testing the final product then began.

Many children wrote about hotcross buns during their writing that day, here are some of their stories.

I was spreading the golden syrip over the hotcross buns. It was yum.

The hotcross bun was yum.  The bun was whte.

I  had  the hot cross buns because they are yummy.

I like hot cross buns.  I tasted the hot cross buns.  They are yummy.

The hot cross buns had raisins in and it tastes like golden syrup.

Mrs Benge gave me a piece of the dough and I pushedt he dough in my fingers.  The hot cros buns taste like honey.

The hotcross buns are very very nice and very very fat.

Hot cross buns. Hot cross buns. One a penny two a penny hot cross buns.

I like the hotcross buns.  I helped Karlene make them. I spread the syrup. It was fun. I tried it. It was yummy.

I didn’t like the hotcross buns.  It was yuk.  I had a try but I didn’t like it so I said I don’t like it and put it in a plastic bag and I didn’t have one  It was yuk.

Take a look at our collage kiwi we have made.

Easter Egg Treats

During discovery, some Kiwi class members enjoyed making some yummy Easter treats for everyone.  First we had to melt the white and milk chocolate buttons slowly in the microwave.

Then we carefully scooped the melted chocolate into the molds.  We found it tricky to get the chocolate in the molds because it was so sticky, so we used another spoon to scrape the chocolate off.

After the molds were filled, we waited for half an hour to let chocolate set.  They smelt and looked delicious when we pushed them out of the molds.

We all hope you have a
HAPPY EASTER!

We Love The Bee-Bots!

Our class has borrowed the Bee-Bots from The House Of Science for the week.  Bee-Bots are little computerized Bees which we can programme.

It is really fun making the Bee-Bots go where we want them to go.  Sometimes it is tricky to programme them to go to the space we want them.  We are learning our lefts and rights.

We have to try again and again to get it right,

But the more we try, the better we get!

Tui Ridge Camp

The Year Three children loved their time at Tui Ridge Camp last week.  Take a look at some of the fantastic activities they conquered.

16 and 26

We have been looking at numbers, what we know about them and ways to create a number. At the beginning of most Math times there will be a number on the board.  The children write down everything they know about that number then we share the knowledge. The photos below show the last two days numbers, 16 and 26. And yes the 1000-984=16 came from a child - with no assistance, check out the last photo to see their recording of it.

Music Making

During discovery there has been a fair bit of music making happening. Just a little loud at times but we never stop it (just move locations sometimes) as there is so much learning evident - from verbal skills to music knowledge and cooperation skills.

Math in Kiwi

I've heard a few rumors lately that we don't do math in Kiwi. This is just to inform you that we do, we do lots of math in Kiwi, it is just not often on paper or in books.  Have a look at these busy mathematicians...
Writing down some of our math knowledge
What we know about the number 12

Identifying numerals

Fly flips eg 5 and what make 8

Subtraction to 20 Bingo

Subtraction to 10 Bingo

Creating our own number equations using dice and an operations spinner

Mrs Benge has been getting us to create and read numbers in the hundreds, we can do one better, check out our 1,000's numbers!!!

Addition and Subtraction board games.

Wow what busy mathematicians :)

Using White boards in Kiwi

In Kiwi we use the white boards alot! Here we are using them during phonics time.

We used them during this handwriting lesson to practise the correct formation of letters before we wrote in our books.

And here we are using them during Math time. Alot of the work we do in Kiwi is on the whiteboards.
