Hotcross Bun making

A group of children made hot cross buns with the supervision of Mrs Benge during discovery time.
They read the recipe and helped measure in the ingredients.
This picture was taken after the warm milk, water, some of the sugar and all of the yeast were left in a warm place for half an hour.  The mixture doubled in size and bubbles were seen in it.
The recipe asked for barely melted butter which we did in the microwave.  We mixed this with an egg, various spices, dried fruit, salt and the remaining sugar.
All children present then took turns stirring this mixture into the yeast mixture with the remaining flour.
Once it was combined to a soft dough it was put in a mixer and dough hooks did the task of kneading for 10 minutes.  When the ball of dough sprung back when lightly pressed it was ready to form into balls.  The children pushed a bit of dough through the opening formed by touching their forefinger and thumb together to make a smooth surface on the bun.
Then the balls were left in a warm place for an hour to double in size.  The above photo was 15 minutes in.
Doubled in size and ready to cook.
Once cooked the hotcross buns were glazed with a syrup of honey, golden syrup and water.
Taste testing the final product then began.

Many children wrote about hotcross buns during their writing that day, here are some of their stories.

I was spreading the golden syrip over the hotcross buns. It was yum.
